About Our Fodder System: A Sustainable Solution for Southwestern Ranching

At Ganados del Rey, we’re committed to raising cattle sustainably in a way that respects our environment and conserves precious resources. One of the ways we achieve this is by incorporating fodder systems into our cattle finishing process.

What is a Fodder System?

A fodder system is a controlled process of sprouting grains, such as barley or wheat, into highly nutritious grass in just 7–10 days. Using minimal water and space, these systems allow us to grow fresh forage year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Grain Selection: We start with high-quality, untreated grains.
  2. Sprouting: The grains are soaked and spread into trays where they sprout and grow into lush green grass.
  3. Daily Harvest: Within a week, the fodder is ready to be harvested and fed to our cattle as a fresh, nutrient-dense supplement.

Why Fodder?

Fodder systems are a game-changer for ranching in water-scarce areas like the Southwest. Traditional grazing and hay production require large amounts of land and water. By comparison, fodder systems are:

  • Water-Efficient: Growing fodder uses up to 95% less water than traditional forage crops.
  • Space-Saving: Fodder can be grown indoors in stacked trays, making it ideal for regions with limited agricultural land.
